Dear e-Visitor,
The Apprentice School is an educational and career opportunity
unlike any other. The School provides high quality, comprehensive
4 and 5-year apprentice programs for students interested in
shipbuilding careers. Since 1919, our programs have produced
over 9,000 graduates in support of the operational needs of
Northrop Grumman Newport News.
Every day, our more than 800 apprentices push new boundaries
of achievement and explore new opportunities in a complex
and challenging workplace. Building and maintaining nuclear-powered
aircraft carriers and submarines for the United States Navy
that will defend our country for years to come is not only
a rewarding experience but also an excellent opportunity for
apprentices to learn about heavy manufacturing and construction
in the most modern shipbuilding facility in the world.
Our motto is that The Apprentice School builds three types
of “ships”: Craftsmanship, Scholarship, and Leadership.
The School is privileged to have a faculty and staff that
endeavor to make our apprentices feel at ease in a challenging
learning and work environment. More than 80 faculty and staff
deliver 17 different programs and over 75 course offerings
that enable apprentices to gain not only the skills, knowledge,
and pride of workmanship, but also the educational foundation
and personal qualities needed to fully meet the challenges
of a shipbuilding career.
Additionally, we are excited that our students have a rare,
contagious enthusiasm and pride in their School. In the numerous
student organizations and in the School’s six Division
III-level intercollegiate sports, the apprentices embrace
activities that create lifelong friendships and memories,
while developing the personal qualities and interpersonal
skills needed to meet the challenges of a shipbuilding career.
At the top of our list of notables are our alumni and the
contributions they make to our business. Today over 2,500
alumni of the School fill approximately 240 different types
of jobs here at Northrop Grumman Newport News from nuclear
pipe welders to senior executives. The growing momentum of
the Newport News Apprentice Alumni Association is an important
part of continuing our School’s traditions and perpetuating
its growth.
As you browse our web site, I encourage you to learn more

Dr. Robert P. Leber
