ElectricianApprentice electricians at Newport News Shipbuilding complete a program designed to give them maximum exposure to the complex electrical systems aboard Naval and commercial vessels. The apprentice is first assigned to a special training area to learn fundamental skills and techniques. Using hand and power tools, the apprentice fabricates and installs components in electrical panels for installation aboard ships under construction. The apprentice is next assigned to a ship to begin a coordinated work rotation involving installation, operation, maintenance and testing of various shipboard systems. These include lighting, power generation and distribution, interior communication, armament fire control, electronics and nuclear systems. As experience and knowledge are gained, the student aids in the training of newer apprentices. Whenever possible, in addition to shipboard training, the apprentice may be assigned to one of several electrical shops for further instruction in the repair, construction, operation and calibration of related equipment and instruments. Trade-related classroom courses focus on such areas as DC theory, AC theory, electromechanical controls and electronics. |
