Outside MachinistApprentice outside machinists learn more about the operation of a ship and its related mechanical systems than perhaps any other shipbuilding trade. These apprentices are assigned to the Machinery Installation Department, which has the responsibility of installing and testing a ship's major machinery and other mechanical components. Consequently, the majority of a student's training takes place aboard ships under construction or undergoing repairs. The apprentice is first taught the safe operation of hand and power tools. These tools are used in the installation and operation of systems and components such as turbines, generators, pumps, propellers, rudders, periscopes, armaments and nuclear reactor components. The training program also requires the apprentice to become familiar with and operate selected shop machines such as engine lathes, drill presses and portable milling machines. |
