Millwright

The millwrights are responsible for the mechanical maintenance, repair, overhaul and installation of the machinery in the shipyard. Accordingly, their training is varied and extensive. The beginning apprentice is taught the operation of a number of machine tools including lathes, shapers and milling machines in order to manufacture parts required to repair production equipment. An apprentice's work rotation includes hydraulic repairs and general maintenance of the equipment in the machine shops; inspection and maintenance of cranes; and machinery repairs in the various waterfront shops, foundries and powerhouses. In the Steel Fabrication Shop, the millwright inspects and repairs the large rollers, presses, planers, and plate blasting equipment. Additionally, the millwright is responsible for such varied equipment as the drydock gates and the yard's extensive welding facilities. When a new piece of machinery or equipment is acquired by the yard, the millwrights are responsible for the initial installation and operation. Related training generally includes tack welding and torch handling instruction, hydraulic instruction, and extensive use and interpretation of technical manuals.
