Background: The competition
allows students to have fun while raising awareness
of the naval architecture profession, the shipbuilding
industry and careers in naval design. The competition
will engage student’s math, science and creative
abilities, and expose them to engineering, drafting
and project planning.
Join us at Bass Pro Shop to watch student-designed
ships weighing up to 700 pounds battle it out their
sea trials. The contest is open to the public and will
be held on the lake behind the store. Festivities will
start at 10:30 a.m. and will include raffles, prizes
and games.
The two teams competing are the Virginia
Beach Advanced Technology Center’s “Sink
Oar Swim” team and the York High School “York
Falcons” team from York County. They beat 38 local
high school teams to get to the final competition. Both
teams had their 700-pound, welded steel boats crafted
by Northrop Grumman apprentices, complete with prototype
composite designed rudders and a fully automated remote
control system for student operation from the shore.
Now it’s on to the finals and into the water for
bow to bow competition, including boat speed, maneuverability
and stability.
This competition will be the culmination
of a year of preparation by The Apprentice School students
working with the naval architects from Northrop Grumman
Shipbuilding and the Hampton Roads SNAME organization.
A trophy will be given to the winner and awards will
be given to six other high school teams for outstanding
technical expertise.
