Apprentice School Student Activities
Extracurricular activities have played an important role in the Apprentice
School since its founding in 1919. A range of social, community service,
and athletic activities are available to those who wish to participate.
The apprentice activities are jointly administered by an elected
Student Council and two faculty advisors, subject to review of the Administrator
of Student Affairs and the Director, Education and Training. A major
source of funding for these programs is revenue from Apprentice School
Students' Association dues. Membership in the Association is mandatory.
The level of dues is set by the Student Council. Dues are paid through
payroll deduction.
Community activities, such as an annual Christmas party for disabled
children, and social events such as dances, are also sponsored by the
Students' Association. Click

compared to other major metropolitan areas. If you are having a
difficult time trying to find a place to live, the Housing Assistance
Program at The Apprentice School can help.
The Housing Assistance Program at The Apprentice School is an effort

The Apprentice School of Newport News Shipbuilding is located in
Newport News, Virginia, in the heart of a region we call Hampton
Roads. In its annual ranking of the best places to live, Money Magazine
ranked Hampton Roads the best large metropolitan region in the South.
Winning attributes included the area's fresh air, low crime
rate, good job growth, excellent public education system, low cost
of living and an average of 212 sunny days a year.
Hampton Roads residents enjoy low taxes. In fact, they're among the
lowest in the United States. The region offers a variety of affordable
housing in almost any setting with housing costs about 12 to 18% below
the national average. The area also has excellent K-12 school systems
with magnet programs, eight colleges and universities and three community
colleges. Hampton Roads has been noted as second only to Silicon Valley
in its per capita concentration of scientists and engineers.
With all that Hampton Roads has to offer, our employees enjoy an
exciting life outside of work. Hampton Roads' temperate climate is perfect
for outdoor activities. After work you can hit nearby Virginia Beach
for great swimming, surfing, and beach combing. Or enjoy a relaxing
weekend of fishing and boating on beautiful Chesapeake Bay. The area
has plenty of parks for hiking, biking and other outdoor activities,
and more public and private golf courses than you can shake a club at.
If arts and entertainment are your thing, you can explore the history
of Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown --or indulge your taste
for the fine arts with a collection of museums, symphony, opera and
theater.

and don't forget to root for the hometown professional and college sports
teams. With premier shopping amenities, outdoor festivals and three
major venues for popular music concerts, there's always something fun
to do. |
